February 2025 Dispatch

Welcome to another wonderful edition of Africa Hunters Dispatch where we bring you the best hunting news straight from the bush country.

We’ve got a taste of the other side for you this month with Sonja Harmse over at Muvhimi Buffalo Safaris discussing the ins and outs of being a professional hunter and Douglas Cockcroft over at Splitting Image Taxidermy talking tips for a successful taxidermy business.

Sonja is not wrong when she states a PH has to be everything for every client — from guide and gun bearer to zoologist, pharmacist and doctor, when the need arises.

Being a PH is by no means an easy job. On four safaris to Africa, I’ve been lucky to have four wonderful PHs and I marvel at their iron will and inexhaustible patience. God bless a good PH.

Splitting Image Taxidermy has made a name for itself with the quality of work Douglas and his crew turns out. If you don’t have a good taxidermist lined up already stateside, I highly recommend a good taxidermist, like Splitting Image, in Africa.

You’ll save money on the mountings and lose it back on the higher shipping costs getting it home, but if your hometown taxidermist only knows whitetails then believe me, you want someone who knows what a buffalo looks like to mount him and Douglas’s guys know!

“The duties of a Professional Hunter on safari are essentially the same as those of a ship’s captain and with the same responsibilities. He’s everything from the social director to the ship’s surgeon, if needed

President Theodore Roosevelt said a man should “speak softly and carry a big stick.”

It’s fair to say that over the past 25 years, there’s very little I would want to do differently.
